A complete Calgary bar design and renovation, transforming an existing pub through strategic space planning, custom millwork and an urban-industrial design concept, supported by full interior design and project management.
Pop’s Pub required a significant renovation to modernize its Calgary location while working within a defined construction budget and retaining elements of the existing space wherever possible.
The project called for more than a visual refresh. Changes to the floor plan, bar configuration, storage and staff facilities were required, alongside a new approach to lighting, seating and finishes. The existing bar was to remain in its general location while being redesigned to improve staff movement and accommodate an expanded draught system.
The objective was to create a stronger identity and a more engaging guest experience without undertaking unnecessary reconstruction.
The commercial bar design needed to achieve maximum visual impact while working strategically with the existing building, finishes and infrastructure.
The bar was oversized and required improved access and workflow. The revised design also needed to accommodate 16 additional beer taps and keg capacity, while introducing a unique self-serve bar element. Seating capacity, circulation and operational efficiency all had to be carefully considered as the overall footprint changed.
Rather than disguising the existing character of the building, the design needed to make it part of the new identity.
An urban-industrial design concept provided the foundation for the transformation, allowing existing architectural elements to be retained and incorporated into the new interior.
Exposed brick, dark finishes, warm wood tones and stainless-steel detailing create a layered, urban character, while integrated lighting adds depth, atmosphere and energy throughout the space.
The redesigned bar became both the visual and operational centre of the interior. Custom millwork integrates liquor display, refrigeration, glass storage and an expanded draught system, creating an efficient working environment with a strong architectural presence.
Thoughtful space planning, lighting and material selections balance the guest experience with the operational demands of a busy commercial bar. Full project management, procurement and coordination with contractors and trades carried the design from concept through implementation.
The result is a confident, energetic hospitality space with an unmistakably urban character—functional, atmospheric and designed to perform.
