An extensive main-floor remodel transforming a compartmentalized 1970s home into a spacious, welcoming kitchen and entertaining environment designed around the way the clients live, cook and gather.
Brief
Having raised their family in the home, the clients wanted to adapt it for the next chapter of their lives. They love to entertain, often hosting large groups, and wanted a more inclusive space where cooking, dining and socializing could happen together, with a stronger connection to the established garden beyond.
Challenge
The original kitchen was enclosed at the rear of the home by an L-shaped wall and hallway, separating it from the main living area and consuming valuable square footage. The challenge was to completely rethink the main floor, creating the scale and functionality required for entertaining while preserving the warmth and character appropriate to this long-established family home.
Solution
Removing the dividing walls transformed the main floor, allowing the vaulted architecture to become part of one expansive yet inviting space. The larger kitchen accommodated an oversized island, peninsula and dedicated bar, with generous guest seating and extensive preparation and serving space.
Rich quarter-sawn oak cabinetry with Old World-inspired architectural detailing gives the kitchen a sense of permanence and craftsmanship. Layered natural materials, substantial millwork and warm finishes create an interior that feels elegant and established rather than formal, while the scale and openness make it inherently social.
The ceiling was carefully modified to accommodate flush-mounted pot lighting, complemented by feature pendants over the island. Together with new flooring, finishes and the garden connection beyond, the completed space feels warm, generous and quietly luxurious—a kitchen designed as much for gathering as it is for cooking.
